đSo⌠What Is Styria Anyway?
Oct 6
Hello friends,
Something funny happened during one of my Zoom sessions this week.
As I was happily talking along, someone raised their hand and said, âMarion⌠what exactly is Styria?â A perfectly fair question â and a great opportunity for todayâs update.
Letâs clear up the mystery.
Austria â or Ăsterreich in German â is made up of nine states. One of those states is called Steiermark in German and Styria in English.
So, whenever I talk about Styrian cuisine, Styrian traditions, or Styrian lifestyle, Iâm talking about the region where I grew up â the place that shaped my humor, my cooking, my love for chestnuts, and probably my accent.
To make it easier to visualize:Â
Styria is roughly the size of Hawaii (the red outlined state)
Austria as a whole is about the size of South Carolina (the chicken drum stick - as I call it)Â
Small, but mighty.

đ Styria â The Green Heart of Austria
Styria proudly calls itself âThe Green Heart of Austria.â And it earns that name â forests, vineyards, rolling hills, and more shades of green than a paint store could ever stock.
Its coat of arms is just as unique: A green shield featuring a silver, fireâbreathing heraldic panther with red horns and claws, topped with a traditional ducal hat. It looks like a panther who went to drama school â and graduated with honors.
Once you know this symbol, youâll start spotting it everywhere. Shops. Buildings. Souvenirs. Even manhole covers.
I could send you on a scavenger hunt, and youâd be amazed where that panther pops up.

đď¸ Spielberg â Yes, That Spielberg
Since weâre already in Styria, letâs visit another famous spot: Spielberg. If the name rings a bell, itâs because itâs home to the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix.
Every July, the worldâs fastest circus rolls into town â engines roaring, celebrities arriving, and fans from all over the globe filling the stands. Spielberg is only about 90 minutes from Graz, and the energy is unforgettable. Even if youâre not a racing fan, the atmosphere alone is worth experiencing.
More stories from Austria coming next Wednesday⌠pack your curiosity and maybe your suitcase.
